About Our Organisation

Vision
The Daveyton Association for Physically Disabled is a one-stop support centre for persons with disabilities in the beneficiary areas around Ekurhuleni Metro.

Daveyton Association for the Physically Disabled is a non-profit organisation that provides protective workshop services and psychosocial services to individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. Due to the vulnerability of persons with disabilities, it is crucial for an establishment like Daveyton Association for the Physically Disabled to continue safeguarding their rights. People with disabilities are more susceptible to various types of abuse, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and financial exploitation. Therefore, funding our protective workshop will help address these challenges. Moreover, our beneficiaries often come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the protective workshop serves as a place of safety for them.

Mission
The Daveyton Association for Physically Disabled makes an impact to the community of Ekurhuleni through its training offerings, social upliftment, and job placement to ensure that persons with disabilities actively participate in the mainstream economy.

We are a protective workshop that provides a skills center for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, we assist with job placement and learnership programs. Our Centre currently serves approximately 60 beneficiaries, while the Department of Social Development funds us for 36 beneficiaries. We have successfully placed some of our beneficiaries into various learnerships, job placements, and contract jobs that we secure at the Centre. However, one of the challenges we face is that not all of our beneficiaries are eligible for learnerships and employment due to the severity of their disabilities. As a result, they are unable to transition out of the protective workshop and integrate into the mainstream economy.

Governance
The governance structure is composed of a 7 member team, which 2 are additional members. The board provides non-executive oversight, strategy, planning, monitoring, and evaluation.

The Center Manager is an Ex Officio, who is the accounting officer for the centre and is responsible for the day-today functioning of the facility.

History

In 1999, a group of community members identified a growing need to assist people with disabilities who faced challenges in mainstream schools, including lack of accessibility in primary schools. This group, consisting of parents, caregivers of children with disabilities, and other individuals with disabilities, formed a committee with the aim of addressing these issues. Daveyton Association for the Physically Disabled (DAPD) was established and registered on March 12th, 2002. The Centre was formed with the purpose of responding to the gaps in the disability sector, specifically the absence of social development services for people with primary physical disabilities in Daveyton and the surrounding areas, as well as addressing gaps in service delivery and extending services to areas where they are nonexistent. The organisation currently has a total of fifty beneficiaries who attend the Centre on a daily basis, with some also participating in job placements and learnerships. There has been noticeable growth and improvement in the development of the program to date.
